Help with ip;od touch, please

Options
Hi there, just wondering if we're missing something really obvious before we take/send in for repair

My son's ipod touch seems to have forgotten who it is. We can't turn it on or off - it just has the apple logo on the screen all the time. When it's connected to the laptop, the message we get is:

USB device not recognised
One of the USB devices atteched to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.

When we click it, it says:

Recommendation:
Try reconnectiong the device. If Windows still does not recognise it, replace the device.

We've tried that, and tried different computers, and all the troubleshooting on the apple site, but to no avail.

Any ideas gratefully accepted, and thanks for reading.
