There's a bit more info about the idea in this Guardian article.

We've just swapped from 2 to 1 cars. We worked out that for the odd times we needed the second car the savings would easily pay for taxis or car hire. It's also a lot less bother having to have only 1 car serviced/Mot'd/insured etc.. If we need a car more frequently we'll definately be looking into carclubs.

Some car clubs also have the option of different sized cars/vans so that you borrow the type of car you need at the time.

I've been using this service for almost a year now. Brilliant idea and very well done. It's good for pootling around doing shopping / picking up bulky items and that's what it's ideal for. I wouldn't use it for longer journeys or weekends away. You do get occasional odd looks when you open the car by holding a card against the windscreen!

I paid extra to reduce the excess on the insurance (for a year at a time).
  • Looks like an interesting idea. None near me, and probably not suit me anyway as I use my car for work each day.

The one thing that did ring alarm bells is that you have to pay £500 insurance excess if you have an accident, even if it was not your fault.
