What are you trying to record onto? For DVD or VHS from before EPG's, should be as simple as giving it the video+ number and setting it to timer rec.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

I am recording onto VHS.I wasn't sure if I could set the timer to record TV and then turn the TV completely off not on standby.

Yes you can. The setup you should have is for your aerial cable to come from your aerial into your VHS recorder then from your VHS recorder to your TV. Your VHS recorder will record direct from the input from the aerial regardless of whether your TV is on or even connected at all for that matter.
