I am hoping for advise regarding text recognition software that will retain the origina layout (colums , pictures etc) and then let me edit the wording. My offered upgrade at a cost is Abbey fine reader 8. Is this good or is there a free software that will perform my tasks! ?

Never tried it, so cant vouch for accuracy, but heres a freeware OCR program
http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?ID=861I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
I don't really use OCR that much so I can't make recommendations. Textbridge worked quite well for me in the past, and I think I had a cut down version called Textbridge Classic (you can get the latest pro version for $80 - about £45).
As for free software, there is some out there, try it out to see if it's sufficient for your purposes.0
