35 and want to study gcse maths

I failed this at school and would really like to study it again and hopefully pass! My local college does this but its over £200 plus full up for this year. Any idea where else I can do this for cheap?

    distant learning places do GCSE's!

I think the OU does but you might have to check that!

I know that years ago they used to give out bursarys for people who wanted to study GCSE's which I did get once.. I had one GCSE already but was able to do 3 more (I dropped the fourth as the tutor was drunk and covered in 'wee'... seriously not kidding!)

have you tried ringing learn direct - they give out info on education options.
    Good luck
    :-)

I have contacted learning direct awaiting a reply, will look at OU now, distant learning places can't think of any!?
  • ok open university don't seem to have gcse's and just realised what you mean about the distant learning places! the penny has just dropped!
  • Ds1's old high school hold courses for adults wishing to take GCSE maths so it may be worth you trying the local secondary schools in your area.

You can contact your local Learndirect Centre to do an Adult Numeracy Certificate, which at Level 2 is the equivalent of GCSE grade C in Maths. This would be free.

Distance Learning colleges are normally more expensive than your local college because of the cost of providing materials.

Level 2 adult numeracy won't be accepted as readily as gcse maths; you are far better off getting the real thing.

Whilst I would agree with you for someone who wanted it for a specific purpose such as teaching/nursing, the OP just said that s/he "would really like to study it again". If money is a problem and the student wants a GCSE equivalent for general employment purposes, the Level 2 is perfectly acceptable. She could then go for the full monty next year if she got really into it and had time to save up.

    Adult learning grant maybe.
  • hi everyone

thanks for the replies! I really want to do the 'real thing'. I'm in a payroll/finance job at the mo and want to maybe take an accounting course. I always put gcse maths on my cv but its a lie!

I'm all for you doing the GCSE maths and things, but if you are in accounting already I think you may find it pretty pointless.

However saying that. good luck if you find someone that does do it :)
