  • Yes I do have charges on the barclay card but was worried that if I reclaimed them they might want the full amount back off me. The on line form said national dept could not help me as I am self employed a child minder but to ring anyway, I will try when I get chance.
Nope no credit union near me I'm afraid.
Do you think it would be a good idea to change bank accounts that would at least give me some breathing space so that I could start repaying more instead of fees. Any idea how Barclay's are likely to respond?

You say you are a childminder. Is there any chance of increasing the amount of children you mind? or are you already up to your limit?

    Hi

Very good idea to change bank accounts. In fact if you have two accounts with the same bank, and are struggling to pay a loan or card, then definately get a new account as this stops them off-seeting your income against your debts as they are entitled to do in their T&Cs. It would be the first thing a debt charity suggest. Go for a basic account that is not credit checked.

Then do charges reclaim. If barclaycard retaliate, then you put in a complaint to the OFT and they will punish them.

What they will do is take the amount they should repay on the charges off your outstanding debt rather than returning the money to you, but that reduces your monthly outgoings anyway.

You may find it better to talk to CCCS as they do have a self employed section. Try sending a pm to CCCS_Sarah, Matthew or Alan, as they help on here regularly.

You make no reference to making provision for your tax payments in your SOA. is this covered?

  • Until recently I was full with childminding but on of the parents has moved away giving me no notice and I,m chasing her as she is in breach of contract, to be honest I'm wondering if I would be better off giving up and getting a job on nights in asda as I, m tiered of parents paying late no holiday pay etc. But then Iwould have to pay childcare or never see my OH. I have had a message left today about someone needing childcare so will follow that up.
Thanks for the support guys many hot tears have been shed today thank you

    Hi

Have you done the calculations on www.entitledto.com about what you would get if you went to work as an employee?

Am really sorry that you have felt low today but to be honest you are in a !!!! (put my own exclamation mars in as MSe does not allow the s word) position and it is probably appropriate to have a howl. You may find that it help to get it off your chest, so to speak.

Do remember we are here and that there are others in similiar or worse situations - Kizzy, Sea78, wot a life and all. and our much loved weller.

You will find a wonderfully supportive community who will hold your hand through thick and thin, so reach out and they will be there. I must go soon, so take care and sleep tight.

  • OK deep breath time to take action. I am going to go into town today to cancel all DDs against the Barclay's account this will leave it 950 OD with only 450 agreed:eek:
I have applied online for a basic Lloyd's bank account. Next step write a letter to Barclay's asking for a refund of charges under hardship grounds and another one asking to stop charges and accept 100 a month repayment:confused:
Then phone mortgage company and explain I will call in and pay mortgage in branch cash as its cash payday today. Then restart DD when new account running
Then wait for everyone to call to say DDs stopped and give them new dank details.
Does this sound right or am I getting this all wrong:o

Gosh, you dissappeared off the page while I was making a phone call!

I would make sure the new bank account is in order before moving the DDS but yes it will be a start.

Have you spoken to any of the debt charities about your situation yet?

  • Not yet need to wait until the house is quite baby having a nap now but will try when mum collects. Failing all else I do have a alliance and lester account that is doing nothing but my nearest branch is a 40 min drive away and I wanted a bank in town, a lot of parents pay cash or cheque.

    Hi

Check out the Alliance and leicester account. IF you have been in credit for a few days each month, then they may offer a £1000 free overdraft.
