crazy gas bill where to go next

I dont have many details so far but a friend has had a crazy gas bill oin the thousands which is something to do with when they changed provider , I think the old company havent updated their received payments or something , I will get more details , they have contacted their new provider but things dont seem to be getting sorted , whats the best route to take here?

    Negotiate with supplier how to clear the arrears.

    Reduce usage to clear the arrears faster.

    I guess this is their old supply so reducing usage won't specifically help although it will give them more disposable cash they can set aside.

    my mistake , they were told when they left their old supplier that they had a zero balance , however somehow the new supplier say they owe £4000

    They need to look at the closing and opening statements - presumably they gave or checked that the meter readings agreed? If the debt is with the old supplier, they should be able to provide evidence of any payments they made that weren't credited to the account.
