Question about No Claims Discount for Car Insurance

Ok, here is the situation that I am trying to get an answer to so hopefully someone here can help.

I have my own car insurance with Direct Line which I have full no claims on but I am also a named driver on my partners policy, also with Direct Line. Now Direct Line also allow named drivers to build up no claims discount. I have been named on her policy for over 5 years and we have never claimed, so my question is do I have 2 sets of NCD? One on my own policy and one as the named driver on my partners. If I do does this mean I could in theory insure 2 cars on seperate policies and have full NCD on both?

Thanks

I know you can have 2 lots of NCB at once because my hubby has and at the moment both lots are being used with the same co on 2 cars.

What I'm not sure about is your situation.....

I would assume that you have 2 lots of NCB but the NCB built up as named driver can only be used with Direct Line I *think*. Its not usual for another co to accept NCB built up in this way. So I'd assume again that as long as you keep one policy with DL then you would be ok.

I am probably wrong though :D

I'd advise calling DL and getting clarification straight from the horses mouth....remembering to take down the names of whoever you talk to and what was said should you need to refer back to it in the future.

  • You can have more than one NCD but for seperate vehicles. Direct line would perhaps recognise both policies.
As you have a policy already, you would probably get a good discount on a second policy anyway (as much as 50%).

The insurance for the Corsa DS is currently driving is in his name. We are in the process of buying him a new car, through Motorpoint, courtesy of Mr T. Once he gets the new car, probably around 15 September, maybe a bit before, but Motorpoint have not even got it yet, OH or I, will then insure the current Corsa, with 17 year old DS as a a named driver.

DH and I both have cars and insurance policies in our own names. If I remember correctly, first time around, I insured my car first, with no NCD, and then took out a policy for the Corsa, applying my NCD to the second policy, both with Direct Line.

I could do with some advice here. Which companies offer discounts for insuring 2 cars in the same household. Presumably, I can still only use my NCD on only policy. Also, my own insurance is due for renewal on 20 September, just to complicate or possibly ease the situation. I can't seem to get my head around this one, more so, because I don't know exactly when we will be getting the replacement car for my son. I am so used to doing insurance on line, that I don't know where to begin with this one.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Hi Dollywops.

Admiral do a multicar policy which gives a discount for more than 1 car. Bear in mind that if you go with them insure the cheapest car first then get your discount on the second, third car etc, that way you get the most discount.

The cost of the corsa insurance will probably be higher than you are expecting, as insurers' systems will see that you and OH both have cars, and that your third car will have your son as a named driver. If their system cannot 'see' that your son has his own car and insurance, it will load as if it is really his car.

Shelly, I don't think that's how the multicar system works ;) Pplus eventually it makes it so that the renewal date on all the cars is the same meaning a big bill once a year instead of separate ones.

Admiral will match NCB discount on normal policies, so usually 50% (or whatever) NCB will be matched on both cars (so same level of discount regardless of cost) BUT they might have problems doing this with a 17 year old on the policy.

(When I worked for them, if you matched someone's discount but there had been an accident with any driver, you reduced the matched bonus by 2 years. I don't think we were allowed to match NCB where there were people not old enough to have earned the NCB on the policy ;))

I disagree. I know that's how it works (or at least thats how it worked in Nov last year) as we currently have both our cars insured with them on a multicar policy.
When I went to take out the policy I sorted out the details of the car with the most expensive quote first. Then we done the details on the second, cheapest quoted car and was told they would apply the discount to the second car added.
I made them cancel the process and start again with the cheapest car first then got the discount on the second, most expensive car.

    Fair enough.

But I'm pretty sure that's not how they intend it to work ;)
