  • What you need to look at is the performance of the funds you would have invested in - and that's probably closer to the average than the best especially if you diversify.

    >> Timing only matters if you're going to make a withdrawal.
And if you don't you may as well give the money away.
(Actually you might get benefit from the investment without a withdrawal so it's not quite true).

You are giving the money to your future self. If my portfolio were to decline by 10% next week but it's not money I needed for 25+ yrs when I retire then what's the problem? If I need it next week then maybe I've got a problem.

What benefit, affected by timing, are you refering to?

Oh yes, there's nothing quite like a 'what's the point of investing' thread, in the current doom and gloom economic climate, to bring out the potentially out-of-a-job IFAs strutting their stuff. Great entertainment.

In Japan I bet commission taking Investment advisers are desparately trying to convince everyone that 30 years is short term.

Hopefully they'll go better than that and not have their clients stake their retirement savings on a single economy.

Lol - you really think a post in an Internet forum is going to have any affect on his business? He probably doesn't need a job anyway. Which is where his clients probably want to be.

If you've got any objective analysis of his points (strutting his stuff?) then I'm more interested in that.

I have been through quite a few stockmarket crashes bigger than this one and I'm still here. Investment business is doing very well this year. Thankfully, not everyone has the misconception that investing means stockmarket and even when it does, recent drops are viewed as a buying opportunity that are more experienced and knowledgeable than you.

I will no doubt be here long after you have found somewhere else to troll.
