Open office problem! Please help
Hi there

This isn't probably the correct way to get help - but here goes! After reading about Open Office on MSExpert and decided to download it onto my computer.

I have just installed it and am having problems mad.gif

Was going to test that I could use the writer part to use as an attachment to an email. When I try to send it it comes up with ' some of the files could not be found and could not be attached to the message. Would you like to send the message anyway? Yes or No?

If I press Yes the other person cannot see what is attached if I click on No the message doesn't go!

What's wrong can anyone help cry.gif

Are you trying to send a open office writer file?
  • Yes that's the one! Can you help? I have uninstalled my MS Office 2003 as I was having the exact same problem!

So is this what you do go to File>Send>Document as email. What is your default email client?
  • You're going to say what a thicket!! What's a default email client? Like Windows Mail or Outlook Express?

Log into your Hotmail/Windows live mail account then go to new like you normally would as your sending a email then Attach>File. *Make sure the file is CLOSED when attaching it*

I've just tried this on a computer with Open Office on it and Outlook Express (although it sounds like you have Windows Mail - you have Vista, right?).

This opens a new email, with the Open Office document as an attachment. I didn't try sending it.

However, it's very unlikely that the person you want to send this to will have Open Office as well - so they wouldn't be able to read it, even if you could send it. The file it is attaching has an ODT extension? (The last three letters of the filename, after the dot.)

May I suggest that you write your document then use Save As (under File) and select "Word Document" from the "Save As Type" dropdown menu. You will then need to select a folder to save it in (My Documents, for example). You might get a warning that some of the formatting may be lost. Ignore this (press Yes or OK, whichever lets you carry on saving it).

Then open a new email, and attach your new Word document to the email, like you would with any other file you wish to attach to an email.

This assumes your recipient has Word on their PC of course (otherwise they won't be able to open it either!)

Hope I've got the right end of the stick, and that makes sense.
  • Hi there

The CLOSED bit has helped!! I didn't realise that I had to close a document first!! OOPS!

Thanks for your help I just have to wait until the morning to see if my friend could open the test attachment!!

Cheers I'll be able to sleep now!
