Is it too early to make raised beds for next year? There's a perfect patch of ground doing nothing next to Little Wool's trampoline I can use.

sorry for the delay in answering.
Now is a great time to start a raised bed, sow a green manure http://www.rhs.org.uk/Advice/profiles0802/green_manure.asp and you will be off to a flying start next year

    good luck
  • My winter prep has begun today. The petunias and lobelia are looking terrible so they are out. In true mse style though I have some winter pansies nearly ready to fill the gaps grown from seed!
  • You have all forgotten to mention baling the flood water out of the garden before starting anything!

I'm fortunate enough not to live near a river/stream, not on a flood plain nor on a road where the drains back up so I don't have to do that.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

the sun is out and I don't have to go to work anymore, well not for a while anyway, so lots more time in the garden for me:j

Got 2 large sacks of daffs ...(splitting with ds for his garden) some more chicken wire for keeping squirrels off and will enjoy planting them this weekend.

Will also be lifting onions later today and leaving to dry in the sun till Sunday.
As it is warm and sunny (well for compared to the rest of the year!) I will leave the toms on the plants as long as poss.

The front garden........only have a small bit of it, rest belongs to neighbour downstairs, looks sad and neglected, so will add some pots of winter pansies and ivy I think. trimmed the hedge last weekend.
Next year will use the space for fruit and veg, I am sowing a green manure now to put some life back in it. I need all the space I can get, back garden wasn't big enough this year and DH said its starting to look like an allotment:rolleyes:

    North Scotland here....

Can I still sow veg seeds up here just now? and if so what?

This is my first year of growing veggies (in a raised bed, 2 x 1 metre) and am not sure if I am too late to do anything else this year. I will be tidying the bed up this weekend, still have beetroot, carrots, leeks and beans growing, but will have some space and would love to start growing something else. Will probably expand the bed for next year to allow lots more growing area, have enjoyed my first years produce.:D

  • Anything I can grow over winter here in sunny (well it was today) Crosby? We spent the day clearing out the raised bed, of rocket, which had taken over; strawberry plants that had sent out loads of shoots but NO strawberries - we did get 12 new strawberry plants though so hopefully next year. And lots of tomato plants, now have a windowsill full of green toms. Was hoping to put some onions and leeks in - anything else that will over winter in our sandy soil. Any tips gratefully recieved.

Too late to start leeks from seed i'd say, but if you can buy plants they should do ok. Japanese onion sets for overwinter to be ready late spring and winter garlic - go to one of the catalogoues like thompson and morgan or a good garden centre, my B&Q doesn't have them.
look for winter salad seed mixes or similar, if you can cover them with a cloche you can pick leaves all winter like lambs lettuce for instance. You can still get away with sowing rocket say, probably get a quick crop in before it goes cold.
