I really am speechless

I have one credit card. I have had it for about 6 weeks. It is my first credit card ever and when i received my first statement i had saved up £150 which i wanted to pay.
I have a flex account with nationwide...Ive had it for 3 years. Its basic..ie.not a debit card..they wont give me a debit card or cheque book as i dont have a credit score ( no debts..no finance etc)
I had to get a credit card as i needed to be able to make online purchases.
I checked on the back of the statement and it stated that i can pay at my own bank or lloyds tsb free of charge but other banks may charge.
Off i trot with my £150 to nationwide...stand in the usual long...long queue and when i get to the kiosk i was told
"you cant pay that with cash"
"what you are joking right!" i replied..quite taken aback.
"you can only pay that with a flex account cheque" the cashier replied
"what! Why?" i asked
"we operate differently to banks" she said.

Well i have to say i am just gobsmacked at this.
Nationwide are totally rubbish IMO.
I have my account registered on my paypal account and when i tried to transfer £10 from my account to my paypal account nationwide declined/refused so now paypal have removed my nationwide account from my paypal account.
I will be hoping to get a current account with a proper bank asap:mad:

You'll get no argument from me. How they are still in business is a total mystery to me.

The bottom line here is that Nationwide are a law to themselves, they are NOT a bank and are still a great british building club, leave them and go to the Halifax or Alliance & Leicester, you will get a Visa debit card and Cheque book as long as you have no adverse credit.

You can use the online banking if you have a cashcard Flexaccount. My girlfriend has one which she uses for holiday only and had no problems registering for it.

You dont need a debit card to make payments using the online banking. The sort code and account number details will be on your credit card statement.

Can you get a cardreader, which I think is necessary for bill payments/funds transfers etc, if you don't have a full blown Visa Debit card?

Nationwide help files seem to suggest not.

I pay my Nationwide credit card bill using Nationwide online banking from my basic (no debit card) FlexAccount.

You only need a card reader if you have a Chip and PIN debit card. My online account just uses good old fashioned security questions.

Halifax nor A&L will not let you pay a 3rd party payment (Bank Giro Credit) over the counter. If you want to pay the bill, either use LTSB as advised, or ask the Nationwide staff (or do it yourself on Internet Banking) to setup a bill payment mandate.

Once setup, it can be used to pay the bill at the counter, Nationwide cash machine or on internet banking. You'll need the Card companies sort code, account number and a reference (which is usually the card number)

A&L are the Giro Bank  , Halifax are not a clearing bank how ever their owners Bank of Scotland are so you could use them.
