Help needed for Legal Issue re Car Insurance please.

Hi,
I have a problem regarding legalities of car insurance and wonder if anyone can advise me please.
My mum lives in Spain but visits Uk regularly so decided to buy a car here to save on rental when she visits but all the rest of the time I use the car. The log book is registered in her name, but I insured the car with me as the main driver. I was meant to put her as an additional driver but for some reason this didn't happen. She has another car and policy in spain. When I came to renew my insurance this year, the insurance broker asked me who the car was registered to and I told them my mum. They had a fit and said it meant I wasn't covered to drive it, as the car was registered in my mums name and to rectify it are renewing the insurance on the 8th Sept with my mum as the main driver and me as a named driver.
However in the meantime, I had a letter from an insurance company saying I had a claim against me for an accident and giving the date. On the date given my mum was over from Spain and she used the car that day. She says she has no knowledge of any accident and there is no damage to the car. I am meant to call the insurance company but I have no idea how I stand legally. The car was insured in my name third party fire and theft, but my mum who didn't have any insurance on the car but owned the car was driving.
I am really concerned about this, and would appreciate any advice.
