 hi,hope someone can help. 5 years and 8 months ago we walked into barclays and closed our account, we were told to pay whatever was owing in charges, which we did there and then and was told the account was closed, now we have just recieved a letter saying we are overdrawn by £47 and are been charged £22 for every five days we are overdrawn. we have had no letters or anyhing in the last five years. my husband phoned them and has asked for all transactions and copies of paperwork (the say they sent us) since January 2002. As the account was "closed" five years ago we now have no statements or any record of the bank account number or anything. we just wondered where we stood on this. thanks

Complain to their Retail Banking Customer Relations and stipulate you WILL NOT be paying the change until they investigate this, They have a system that will go back 6 years and will show these transactions-they will be archived. This is a discusting way of getting money from someone-when I closed my account with them, they gave me my funds and then bid me farewell. Just as I was about to walk away-if it hadn't been for my banking experience I would of been in the same boat as you-but I asked if there was any debit interest due to be applied and they said ''oh yes, 6p''......due to be applied next week.
Now as my balance was 0p on closure-that meant I would of been charged for going over without an arranged facility thus incurring charges (and for someone who's never incurred a bank charge in their life....you can imagine how annoyed I would be)!
SO I THOUGHT YOU CAN FORGET IT!!!
I paid the 6p in and legged it as far away from Barclays as possible-I only had an account with them 8 months....says it all!!Loan-£3600 only 24 months of payments to go!!!
All debt consolodated and cards destroyed!!
As D'Ream would sing 'Things.....can only get better'!!!0 -

Hi Julie29
you could have whats called a 'gone away' marker on your account which means no mail would be sent to you in this time or since the marker was applied, so double check that first, if that is not the problem then :
1. if your account is still open, check whose name it still comes under - joint or sole
2. the copy statements will show what the current balance is now and hopefully show you what has come out the account since it was meant to be closed
3. often interest charges are applied a month after and so if the account was not closed immediately then interest could have been added to your account before it was closed taking you overdrawn and staying overdrawn till this day
unfortunately i have to say that its probably best to pay whats owing first because it could affect your credit rating. so pay it then investigate it later. You may have to log a complaint to have it looked into, so just make sure that it will be escalated and get a reference number for the complaint so that you know it has been logged, any questions about this then feel free to mail me0 -
thank you for your replies, we still waiting on paperwork they said would be here 3 days ago, but i will pay what they state and then investigate. once again thank you.0

Barclay's Bank were involved in the slave trade back in the old days so I have been told, sum's them up I guess. :rolleyes:Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

this happened to me last year with another bank, closed account nothing from them for about 2 and a half years (at same address) then a letter demanding £300! i wrote them a letter saying that when i was in the branch closing the account i was told that was it, all done.
if there were any charges to be applied i should have been made aware of it. letter back within a few days, was a mistake, they had cleared the account and enclosed a statement to show clear.
was rather pleased about it and thought nothing more of it until i checked my equifax report last week, they had marked me as 3,4,5,6 payments late and a default
might be worth a simple letter?0 -

hello! last year i worked for 6 months at a company and after i finished my contract i left my barclays account opened for receiving my holiday money. i left maximum 5 pound on my account knowing that in the next 2 weeks about 600 pounds were about to come in. so i left England, went home and returned after 8 months when i received a letter that i had a debt of 500 pounds at wescot credit services. so i went to barclays who told me that my account is closed and told me to speak with wescot.i called them and told me that i had an overdraft of 16 pounds on 2 september 2008, which i didn t make. my debt at barclays rose to 250 pounds. they transfered it to wescot and rose up to 500. so let s say i had an overdraft of 16 pounds. 2 weeks later i received 600 pounds on my account . this 600 pounds shoudn t t have covered the overdraft? without knowing what s happening i withdrew the 600 pounds. in this time i was home in eastern europe. the bank sent me letters, and after that wescot send me letters but at my former work place in uk so i couldn t receive them. if i knew i had a debt i would have gone to the bank to make something. what i must do? i received many papers that they will sue me. if they will i will have a final amount to pay including judgement costs. will this final amount grow after cort final decision? i must say tha they dindn t give any details about how i made the overdraft.thank you0
