Hi,
HSBC closed my sisters account back in Feb 2007. Current and Savings was withdrawn and CC limit was decreased.
Some news on BBC:-

Not exactly 'news'. That item dates back to October 2006, but it would seem HSBC are still at it.

You are entitled to know why you have been the target of a banks levey of their trading rules, speak to a legal advisor and they will tell you all of your rights, including the "freedom of information act"Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

Thanks for all the comments. The next steps for me are to open an account with A&L or use my existing other bank accounts and transfer all my direct debits and standing orders. Then I will write to HSBC review team with proof of all transaction. If not successful then I will write to HSBC complaint team and if not successful then I will write to Financial Ombusman Society and probably working lunch. I agree there are better things but I haven't done anything wrong and this is a misunderstanding which I will give my best to clear it. Keep you all posted how this goes on.0

Its not like HSBC to do this without a good reason, regardless of the current economic climate.
There must be a reason behind it. They just don't turn down good business for the hell of itTotal Reclaimed from banks and credit cards so far: £14139 :T
Amount outstanding £550 :beer:0 -
in fact I am pretty sure of thatTotal Reclaimed from banks and credit cards so far: £14139 :T

The customer service advisor at HSBC branch said they didn't give which transaction but it is because of the recent transactions and activity. That's their reason. They think something dodgy is going on and I intend to provide evidence what transaction is what, where it came from and where it went. I think someone saw all these transaction and thought...oh something is going on here and terminated my account. Its all assumptions! They assume something fradulent is going on. That's one of the reason I just dont want to ignore and move bank account. I intend to prove it and I want some answers from them. There are loads of people who DO do fraud. HSBC would have to go and catch those accounts. Not when we have valid reasons behind transactions.
The thing is they have provided you with an answer and they are merely asking for proof to settle their suspicions. Once a suspicion has been raised, this has to be satisfied before a closure decision can be overturned-this would be the same for any of the UK banks as the legislation around money transmission bounds the banks to investigate matters of this kind fully and to protect us from financial crime.
As soon as you have produced clear evidence that your intentions were merely for the purposes of innocent use and not for something that can be construed as dishonest or deceptive, then I cannot see any reason why the bank would want to lose your business-as you give validly pointed out, you have been a long standing customer. But regardless of your loyalty or reputation with a bank, they still have a ''duty of care'' to their customers and to the Government of this country who licences the banks to operate, to protect innocent people from the implications of financial deception and crime.
I know this is a larger picture than what needs to be addessed to resolve your situation but can you understand why the bank is being so thorough and direct with you here?
Imagine if they suspected someone of fraud and they sent a letter saying ''Dear Mr Customer, we have seen some transactions on your account that we feel breach the original terms of the account you applied for, so please can you contact us so we can establish that everything is to our satisfaction by visiting you local branch or calling us so we can resolve this amicably''
A fraudster would have a field day!!! (And furthermore, so would the FSA and the High Court when they prosecute the bank who sent the letter for ''tipping off a potential fraudster) Besides, a true fraudster would just ignore it. Therefore HSBC have to be this direct so legitimate and honest people get in contact-and they will be the ones who's inhibit (stoppage/closure) on the account will be lifted for.
I know the situation is stressful and I am sure the bank do not enjoy spending time investigating this when it is these circumstances, but you have nothing to hide and I am sure the proof is easy to obtain and establish so I would not worry much now until a decision has been reached after the appeal, which if all goes well, will be in your favour.
Hope this helps somewhatLoan-£3600 only 24 months of payments to go!!!
