Black Cab Driver, Good Idea Or Not?

Options
Hi all i'm after some advise really.

My Dad has had to give up working suddenly due to illness and i was wondering if i should start driving the cab - obvoiusly after obtaining the relevent badge etc etc.

The Black Cab ( not private hire car we're talking here) is just sat up the drive at the moment and my Mother was thinking of selling it - been offered £13,000 for the Cab AND Plate been told that's quite a low offer.

We live in the North West, a place in the borough of Trafford 8 miles outside Manchester so not talking London here where i think Black Cabbies do quite well.

Anyone give a rough idea how much you can earn a week? say doing a normal 40 hour week or so Mon-Fri - i do know nights and weekends are where the money is best but i was wondering if it was realistic to be making £300ish a week outside this?

Anyone give any pointers to the above plus any other Black Cab info much appreciated.

Thanks guys.

With cabbying its not always about the number of hours you put in but about when you put those hours in. Friday/ Saturday nights, Bank Holidays and Xmas are just some of the times you will coin in but obviously this will effect your social life.

You will also need to do a test with your local council to show you know the local area as well as regulary maintaining the vehicle. Is a good flexible job but certain areas have too many cabbies and this has a major effect on income!

Good luck with whatever you choose!

I'm in Edinburgh, so no idea how fairs compare with your area, but I take cabs too and from work, through a scheme for people with a physical disability, so I see alot of cabbies, almost all of them like the work and say they make decent living without having to work far too many long hours

All the cabbies I've talked to who did some thing else beforehand much prefer being a cabbie. Previous occupation include civil servant, builder, post-office worker, painter.

hi! my friends are taxi drivers in liverpool (not too far ) and just for the licence plate it is 55,000 so i think you would have to be very silly to accept that offer! ive seen people in lpool advertising to swap a cab with its plate for a house! so no way is 13,000 a good offer.... one option could be to collar / rent the cab out e.g 200 a week for day shifts 200 for night shifts which comes to 400 a week! ( obviously check out your local rates)

hope that helps and you dont sell for that!

    Thanks guys for that.

moorsey, blimey i did'nt realise it was that much for a plate! although i do believe they are hard to come by thus making them quite valuble.

My Mother was considering 'tracking' the cab out, by that i think it means renting it out to someone in the trade then they pay her a set amount a week and they then pocket the rest.

I'm a bit fed up in my current job aswell which just adds to the dilemma!

    What a load of rubbish.

If you are going to advise, at least do it correctly.
  • The best way to find out how much it is worth is to try to rent and buy one !

As a very recent cabbie in your area isn't your Dad the best one to answer your questions? If he didn't work the hours that you're thinking of doing he must know other cabbies locally who do. Or are you trying to research without him knowing?

Talking about doing things correctly, perhaps you could "correct" the post rather than just calling it a load of rubbish?? :p

I think you should go for it bud ;) if it doesn't work out call it experience and sell the cab then.

But i'd say be prepared to lose your weekends
