Replacing Heater Matrix in a Vauxhall Zafira

Hi hope someone can help. During a disasterous camping holiday our heater Matrix blew up on my feet in our car.

So any mechanics out there; DH is replacing the black clips on the matrix as I type with the help of a Haynes manual. He hasn't taken out the whole dash only the console and I have been reading that you should remove the entire dash. If this doesn't work, (fingers crossed) would it make any difference if the dash was completely removed.

Just any help welcome really. I have posted on a couple of car forums but the last postings on this seem really old.
