Credit check for rental property question?

Hi, we have seen a place to rent that we like. We are worried about the credit check. We have no debts or anything like that and our current landlords are going to give us a good reference. We also did a credit check ourselves through experion a few months ago which came out fine. However, the problem that we have is that my husband has his own company and he is the sole employee. I am worried that any credit checking agency wil fail him for this reason. He pays himself dividends and this is all legal, he pays corporation tax etc. He makes about £60,00-£70,000 per year. As an employee of his own company he pays him self minimum wage.

Would my husband be able to write himself a reference (what should he put on any forms submitted)? How should he go about getting satisfactory credit reference? The IL does not class him as self employed, the IL classes him as director of his own company and employee of a company.

It seems to depend on which credit check agency the LL/LA use. OH is self employed and we've had trouble with MARAS (we were told they 'fail' self employed people on principle and advise the LA to ask for six months rent in advance), and he was regarded as 'high risk'. However we've gone through agencies that use other companies ('Homelet'?) and it's been fine, and OH has been categorised as 'low risk'. So it seems to be totally random ... although we did have one credit check company who, even though they knew OH was self-employed and the director of his own company, sent him a form asking for a character reference for himself ...
