    It's not straightforward that one.

For an equivalent amount of energy gas is much cheaper. But there is a lot more wasteage to the atmosphere with a kettle on a gas hob as opposed to an electric kettle.

My gut feeling is the gas hob would still be cheapest but take longer. Pure guesswork though and I can't think how to do an experiment to answer it.

I don't know either but I know it costs 3/4 of a penny to boil two mugs of water in my kettle. It takes about 5 minutes to make two cups of coffee on the gas hob using my stove top coffee pot.

    Hi skintmum,

As your thread has dropped off the front page of Old Style I've moved it over to the Gas and Electric board to see if you can get more replies.

There have been several posts asking the same question.

Post 3 has summed it up, but we are only talking about fractions of a penny.

    True Cardew.

But a gas hob is only about 60% efficient where the electric kettle would be 99.9% efficient. 40% of the heat generated by the gas ring radiates into the room. Also it will talk longer to come to boil.

It depends how you define 'efficient'.

An electric kettle is 100% efficient in converting electricity into heat. However even an electric kettle loses some heat as it heats up.

I have not ever read about 60% for a gas hob - but have no reason to think it is inaccurate.

The main point is surely that the savings involved are so small to be insignificant.

True, I doubt even a penny difference.
  • Having been desperately searching for this thread it suddenly occured to me that there is another thing to add to the mix.

Whilst I suspect gas is cheaper, unless you measure carefully the amount of water you put in your stove kettle you will probably boil too much. There is also the chance you will leave it boiling for longer as there is no automatic cut out. Add to that the loss of energy to atmosphere and the considerable cost of a quality gas kettle.....

In short I have decided to go for an eco kettle, as the most efficient way for a nice cuppa :coffee:

If the heating's on use the gas, if the heating's off use the 'lectric?
