in Credit cards
I received a letter today informing me that my card has been used at a merchant where account details may have been compromised.I have not lost any money and the bank will issue me with new cards.
The bank won't tell me which merchant it is.Does anyone know who it might be ?My last transaction was with famous retailer and I don't want to mention any names in case it is not them

It could be any one of a thousand different merchants. Credit card and identity fraud are like trojan viruses, anyone, businesses and individuals alike, can be "infected". It's possible that your card could have been cloned at some stage, up to 2 years earlier, and only now are the fraudsters using it to make test purchases.
Check your statement to see which transaction or transactions look unfamiliar; that will be the culprit. Be especially aware of transactions for small amounts like £1.00, or mobile phone top-ups with providers you don't even subscribe to. i-Tunes is another favourite for fraudsters. These are generally CNP (card not present) fraud, easily carried out because the PIN isn't required.
By now you'd have read of the US bust of the 11-man ring, where details of over 41 MILLION credit and debit cards were recovered. That's just ONE ring, no doubt there are many, many fraudsters there scamming us honest consumers (and businesses) left, right and centre.0 -

Having you Credit Card details compromised does not mean that there definitely WILL be fraudulent transactions, although it is a good idea to keep a close eye on your statements from now on.
It basically means that one of the Businesses that you have purchased from using the card or even the Card Provider themselves have been somewhat lapse with your personal data and there is a possibility of fraudsters getting hold of your details.
Provided they cancel the existing cards and re-issue you should be ok, but definitely watch your statements closely.0 -
My credit card was done for £900 last year.
As I never actually had the card (cut it up ages before)
There was three big companys that I used the card with on the internet.
I never had to put my cards number in when ordering,as they had all the details on file.
When I noticed the money had gone missing, it only took the Halifax two weeks to refund the money.Owing on CC £00.00 :j

My credit card had 3 fraudulent transactions last week--all on the same day--totalling £2,400.I check it on line so discovered the fraud 2 days later. It is a card I only use for odd online purchases so when details are left on file.........I thoughtI was careful but I shall be neurotic about leaving info. now!0

Thing about card details being used to make Internet, Mail Order or Telephone purchases of goods, is that crooks need more than your card details. They also need your address (which usually differs from a shipping address).
To deter them using this extra information to acquire other cards or loans in your name, then check this out - it's FREE and I hope Martin adds it to - Ones Not To be Missed.
