The only exception might be if you are going to buy a new car and drive it for ages - my mother's last car was bought new, and then she had it for 11 years.

My German car (which one MEW-er and BTL girl called "a shed" - was bought new and is 7 years old. I'll be keeping it many years yet.

Looking at some of the most modern cars, they seem too complicated. I've been told even the dealer's mechanics struggle with the sheer complexity with them - especially the really clean green ones.

You trust a car dealer's word JP? That explains a few things.

I wanted my asbestos garage roof replacing with a traditional apex tiled roof.

The builder quoted £3k + VAT.

I bought the materials for £900 and treated two friends to the tune of £300 each for two weekends work and saved myself £2,000. I'm not sure what profit margin the builder was on but I imagine he could have done the work in two days with one assistant. Maybe he thinks he is worth £1,000 a day - I didn't and it hasn't fallen down yet. I also learnt how to build a roof and I cut all the joints myself.

Businesses have to pay for asbestos removal/disposal at a tip whereas you as a private individual are entitled to take it to your local waste recycling centre and have them take it off you for free.... which is what you presumably did?

I know as I did this when I too demolished an old concrete/asbestos garage a few years ago. You'll never find a cheap quote for that work where the asbestos is disposed of properly.

more likely he didnt feel like risking a slow lingering death so priced it high to either avoid doing it or make a wad of cash to justify it.

Depends on the type of asbestos. The sort locked up in concrete boards is relatively low risk where as the powdered stuff is obviously lethal.

How ironic are you german! do you know what irony is:rotfl: .
I just debunked a perception. No one is calling your car a shed but the far east make more relible cars it is in Black and white. Is it upseting that a poor kia driver could have a reliable car, some of this is beond me I tell you.

You can't blame me for missing it when you're so mesmerised about the high quality of new-builds. ;)

The one-third one-third one-third thing is not intended to be an accurate reflection of all property builds; how could it be when there are so many varying factors. What it does do is give you an indication if something is wrong with your projections. So if you buy a plot for £200,000, you should be thinking (all things being equal) of building £600,000 of house on it. If you plonk a two-up two-down in the middle of the plot with no space for further development you will save on build costs and might eek out a small profit, but you're not realising the potential of the site.

If you spend £400,000 building costs on an all mod-cons house with swimming pool, sauna, solar panels and the like, on a £100,000 site, the low value of the land might hint that you won't get the profit you expect (or it might be a cheap deal).

A friend of ours built his own house 3 years ago. I dunno what the land cost but it's a 2 bed detached with garage and it cost him £45,000 to build. It was probably worth about 180k at the peak.

    Does this help.

I think it's important to have a car which is reliable, doesn't cost too much to run (petrol, insurance, maintaining the thing, etc) and which is nice to drive.

Our R reg Fiat fills all these criteria for us!

I have an R reg Fiat too! I would like a "nicer" car as I don't find mine all that nice to drive (and I do love cars) But it was my first ever car which I have had 3 years, so I will drive it till it is time for the scrap yard in the sky, then up grade.
Don't see the point in getting rid now as it is perfectly functioning and not done 50k yet despite it being nearly 10 years old.
