Currys TV Insurance

I bought a flat screen TV from Currys approximately 2 year ago costing around £1300. I also purchased covering insurance for any break down, £5.70 a month.

The TV broke down about 4 weeks ago, Currys took it back and tried to repair it. Turns out they cannot repair it. So what they have offered me is a voucher for a TV with same specifications as the original. Now this voucher is only valued at £550.

I’m not to happy about this. I was under the impression they would offer me voucher for around £1300. I have to admit that I lost the original policy and terms. I have requested a copy of the policy.

Am I entitled to my £1300 voucher?

Thanks,

Gerry.

  • I imagine ( i havent seen the t&c) it will state current market value.

Items such as TV's change specs continually and soon bcome out of date. I can imagine their offer is in line with this.

Least you will have made back the costs of your premiums.

Wouldn't have thought so Gerry. Though do check the T&Cs when you get a copy.

Extended warranties are usually on a repair or like for like replacement basis - which is what they're offering.
Or put it another way, if the cost of the same TV had doubled to £2,600 would you have been happy with a £1300 voucher?

BTW, if you want extended warranties in future try searching the net. Curry's and the other stores make a mint on point of sale policies so you can get the same cover, often with the same insurer online for about 50% of in-store. ;)

We Had a five year extended warranty from comet, tv died with a month left to go on it and they sent us a voucher for the original cost of it.

As i had read in the terms and conditions that they could replace it with a model of similar specifications i went straight out and spent it on a decent tv before they could palm me off with a cheap one which they wanted to do a week later.

Where prices drop with electrical goods as they are made cheaper you will probably
find they will only pay the replacement cost.
  • I would'nt buy anything from Curry's, even if they gave it away for free.

Err no - ive no idea what your talking about - sorry. Did you get something free that didnt turn out to be free?!??
  • I rang Curry's customer services to complain and told them they have just lost a customer who would never shop there again.

Of course, when I went there next day I bought the TV I wanted at the price I wanted. I am not so stupid as to cut off my nose to spite my face!

I didn't buy the insurance though - TV's seem to last and the price just keeps on dropping

    Thanks,

    Gerry.

Currys will send you a voucher so you are able to buy an equivalent specification model. If they sent you a voucher for £1300 you would be buying a much better tv than the one that broke. What they will have done, is looked how much the exact TV you had cost to buy brand new, or if not avaliable anymore, for a TV that had the same specifications as it and valued the voucher at that. I believe their T&C's around this are on their website, but don't quote me on this one. Also, legally, it's not insurance, it's a 'service agreement'.
