I don't understand the problem my son started school at 4 and will be 15 when he leaves, he is now in year 7 and never had any problems. He is with his peer group has friends and is settled. Yes he is small but perfectly happy.Barclaycard 3800

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
I so agree with you!!!
My DS1 started school nursery at 3 years 1 month, we defered school entry for him by a year and he didnt start school til August last year when he was 5 years and 8 months. Best thing we did and he takes more in and is much more capable being that year older.
did your son go into reception when he started school, or straight into year 1?'bad mothers club' member 13

I think the poster may have been refering to a time when there was no reception year so you did go when you were 5 into what is now year 1.
Currently reception year is the acedemic year (ie 01.09 - 31.08) in which they turn 5. Year one is the acedemic year in which they turn 6.Fair enough it might not have been called it, but I def did the 'reception' year. Born in Sept 1966 I went to school in Sept 1971. It sticks in my mind cos I was an angel in school xmas play and the following June 72, we moved house to a dfifferent town and I changed schools.

I didn't know they did 2 nursery years in Scotland though. The ones who have taken early entry at our nursery the Sept-Dec born kids of the year below who just miss but get in in Jan if they have spaces are mainly (not all) saying they regret it as the topics are repeated so they do the same thing twice between Jan-July in their second year. Also if you have an older child at the school that you take and pick up, then you are running up the school 3 times a day, something I was sick of by the time my youngest's nursery year was finishing and she hadn't taken early entry.:D0 -
i would love for both of mine to have an extra year of nursery or reception. eldest was nowhere near ready for year 1 straight after turning 5, and youngest probably won't be either. i am sending him to nursery and i know he will enjoy it, but i wish he could stay there for 2 years instead of 1
both of mine are summer birthdays, and both boys. i think that makes a difference although i realise that some summer born boys are more mature/clever/etc. than mine'bad mothers club' member 13

Never heard of a time when there was no reception

Me too back in the 70's when I was 4. So did everone else in my school.

In the U.K mrcow? as I recently saw you said you are a Canadian citizen. With family in Toronto I discovered a couple of years ago on a family visit that my son who was then just about to start yr 2 would have only just been going to f-time school (Grade 1) if we'd lived there.
Good memory!
I have duel nationality but was born and raised in the UK so am both a UK and Candian citizen. I can live/work in either country (but am in the UK as all the family I have grown up with are over here).
The schools in the US and Canada are a little behind year on year with us. We discovered this when my sister went to school out there for about 6 months......she was top of the class over there bless"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."

My DD was 4 in March, here they all start school in September but the children born after 1st March only go part time until after Christmas. I am really disappointed that DD missed the cut off date as shes more than ready for full time school!!!! My DS went full time straight away and he has thrived!!0
