ormus, what's the diameter of that piece of wood steeped in hot water? and do you think you could bend it more?
  • The position on the cuts depends on the bend -

a convex bend - you cut the back (the surface against the wall)

a concave bend - you cut the front. (more difficult to get a smart finsih if you aren't painting)

definately try bending the wood. Steambox would be a good method, the heat makes the wood supple. If you use steam you can't hang about you have to do it quickly. As it will cool and become stiff quickly.

If you are able to build a jig with the profile of the curve on it and prepare with some G clamps ready. Fit the skirting onto one end and clamp in place, then bending the wood to the profile and clamp as you go.

It may take several steaming/bending cycles to achieve the finished curve.
  • i have just had this problem with my bays windows and after snapping numorus pieces wot i did was clamp the skirting as curved as poss i then clamp a wall paper steamer to the skirting and kept moving it every half hour and after six hours it held its shape allowing me to fix to wall hope this helps it does take alot of patiences also leaving no saw cuts to fill
