Hi
I am living with a lovely couple and the landlady's older sister at present and the couple have gone away on holiday. The other day I spilt red wine on the carpet! Argh! A big stain too! (maybe 20 cm long by 10 cm wide) I immediately got the salt on it then vacuumed it up and then treated it with carpet cleaner. Now there is an obvious lighter coloured patch around the wine stain and the wine stain is still there - not that bad, and not red but still there.
Any suggestions as to what to do? I have spoken to the landlady's older sister, also lovely, and have said I am willing to get it professionally cleaned before they get back. She said to wait till they get back as its a very big thing and just tell them that I am willing to do that.
Any suggestions what to do with this lighter coloured patch? Should I continue to try to clean it up myself? Any suggestions as to what works?
Thanks

You could try hiring a rug doctor from homebase these work pretty well in my experience at least it will make the whole carpet lighter!Mine needed a new fan so that must be whats wrong with yours:D0

I vote for the rug doctor too. It's probably as effective as professional cleaning, IMO, but cheaper. If there's a light patch it's because the carpet is a bit grubby. If you clean the whole thing at least that won't look so bad.
You really need to keep working on it when it's wet though. As soon as it dries, you've got your work cut out. Try to soak it out with towels etc and dabbing rather than scrubbing which would be more likely to see in ingrained.
I think it's also better just to keep wetting it with water than applying products.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

We use a can of 1001 carpet mousse for stubborn stains on our carpets though we also have Bissell proheat carpet cleaner (worthwhile investment IMO).. Worth trying something like that before paying out to hire a rugdoctor. Have a look here though as the 1001 website has lots of advice on stain removal (using their products obviously!): http://www.1001carpetcare.co.uk/stain-removal-tips-and-solutions/food-and-drink/red-wine.html
...one thing they say not to use is salt.

I second the 1001 carpet mousse. clean your carpet with it or similar products untill you get the stain removed, then clean the entire carpet to make it one uniform colour0
