Best way to protect passwords please ?

Hi folks,
I have seen mentioned a while back on GIOL, CRYPTAINER LE
can anyone suggest an alternative place to store passwords, or is this the best freebie one going ?
The other question is, I have on here Spybot and Ccleaner and use Virgins PC Guard as my main anti-virus and firewall.
Will it be safe to use an encryption vault with these applications ?
I run on windows Xp withSp2, also use Firefox too.
