dell inspirion no sound from speakers??

Hello everyone my brother has just bought a new dell computer and didn't get the original speakers as he had his own from previous dell tried them and another set no joy the just dont work ??
Been in the control panel (Vista) and checked no joy ,are we missing something simple or does it sound no pun intended faulty ??Cheers for any help on this matter.Leachy

Ok first try going in to Start / control Panel and then system and Device Manager this may be slightly different on vista I'm using xp but should be similar.

Then in device manager see if their is anything that has a ! next to them.

If that don't work What make of speakers you got?

Is it a laptop or tin box? If a laptop then press fn+end together.
