Lost/Hidden e-mails

a friend of mine, & no, it's not me  has changed ISP's & has 'lost' all their e-mails in OE from the previous one (ISP)

another friend has told him that they're all still there on his HD, but he doesn't know where to look & has asked me to help. & although it does ring a vague bell, I don't know where to start looking or what file extensions etc to look for

can anyone point me in the right direction?

For a start changing an ISP wont delete e-mails from any folder
    manually deleting them will though..

thanks, will give that a go :)

I had a vague idea that the new ISP would put it's 'own version' of OE in & that all the old stuff would still be there, but not show up in the 'new' OE

Nah OE is a Microsoft program and by the EULA even ISPs cannot change
any OE settings without express permission from the Developer i.e Microsoft
the only thing an ISP can do is to change the service, i.e who to dial-up.

    I see

I knew someone else who changed ISP's & their OE came up 'blank' after the ISP's software was installed. I thought that's what had happened this time too. maybe they were both messing around with stuff they shouldn't have during the install

anyway, I'm sure we'll get it sorted out now :)

I know what you mean by "own version". Whilst it's still Microsoft OE, most ISPs brand it with their own logo in the top corner and in the program "title" - eg. "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Wanadoo". Therefore, when you run the setup program to configure your PC for a new ISP, it may well re-install OE (although it should ask you first) which could over-write the original installation and hence all the original emails - therefore it's always important to make sure you do a backup before running a new ISP setup (speaks the voice of hindsight !!!) :p

Also check out this thread which offers advice on tracking down your message store folder - unfortunately, if OE has been re-installed, the message store folder will probably be in the same (default) location which means it will have more than likely over-written (ie deleted) the previous messages

  • just sounds like when they installed it the email was automatically setup and a new identities folder created.

do a search for *.dbx and it'll show you all the folders that were in OE. Then you can point the Wanadoo account to store mail there.
