Multiple Sclerosis and Life Insurance.

Hi All,

Anyone got a horror tale (or better still a success story !) with regard to acquiring life cover when there's MS in the family (but not necessarily in the genes ;)).

The g/f's Dad died from MS a few years ago. She's just tried to arrange mortgage-related life cover through Norwich Union and been rebuffed on full cover (i.e., covered for death or critical illness "other than conditions affecting the central nervous-system, including Multiple Sclerosis)".

AFAIUI, MS is not an hereditary condition. Some research suggests a slight predisposition in offspring of MS sufferers. In other words, she is fractions-of-a-percent more likely to be susceptible to MS than somebody picked at random from the general population. She's had life insurance/assurance before - even with NU - and has never had to resort to partial cover (and has always mentioned her Dad's illness). Was she just lucky in the past or are the rules changing ?

Is it reasonable for NU to refuse full cover ? Is it worth arguing with them about it ? And are any other insurers known to be less bothered by 'MS in the family' ?

Thanks for any help,
Mike.

Go to an IFA/independent protection advisor. Make them aware of the situation and they can phone round the top priced providers before submitting an application to make sure there will be no issues or if there are, what they will be.

NU are not appearing regularly at the top of the pricing list at the moment so there would be some saving on the premium too at the same time.
