Bank Account declined due to someone else made bankrupted in same household?!

Gilfriend’s sister applied for a current account with RBS. Everything was going ok, they asked for proof of income etc, but today had a letter back saying she couldn’t have the account because her father was made bankrupted while living in the house?

Can they do that, i.e decline bank accounts, loans etc if someone else has been made bankrupted in the same house?

Think she's worried that if she want's to apply for a mortgage in the future the fact that her Dad has been made bankrupted will effect her?

did the letter actually say t was declined becauseher dad was bankrupt??? Surely that must break some legislation. data protection maybe??

Yes, a bit strange if you have no financial connection ie: no joint loans, they should only have checked the applicant's files? They shouldn't be checking her father's files!

When someone is declared bankrupt, they are put on a register similar to that of the electoral role-called the insolvency register. ANYONE who has been declared Bankrupt will be shown on here-including a certain named famous lady recently in the papers is on the register-rather shockingly address as well which is not very sensitive of the courts.

Anyone with the OP's Dad's name would be able to access these details.

What concerns me is I don't think people are aware that the general public can just access these details and find out things about a person.

just say kerry jayne katona - it's all public knowledge anyway.

I think the bank are wrong to use this information to refuse the bank account, and would appealing to them if it was me.

Yeah but now mad stalkers know where the poor woman lives! I think everyone is entitled to privacy and when you go to an OR then it all becomes public knowledge!
