is there a website that rates each area by post code--or did I dream it up??
I think it had schools, income levels, crimes stats etc.

I think the one you're thinking of, and by far the best one is :

Just key in your postcode and it will give you a ranking out of 32000+ codes, where the higher the number the better the area. It also breaks down the factors that give you that score.
The link page is for Boley Park, Lichfield, Staffs (believe it or not, not actually the best rated post code in Lichfield) - anybody manage a better rating ?
By the way for reasons of anonimity this is where I used to live 20 years ago, not now0
