How do you get an old tank out of the loft?

I need to clear my loft to have extra insulation fitted by the scheme run by the council. There is an old plastic water tank up there that is bigger than the loft hatch, however it went up there through this hatch so it must come down the same way. How do I do it? I'd rather not have to cut it up, have plans for using it as a giant planter in the garden.

What are you expecting? It's rigid so if it won't fit through the hatch you have to either cut it up or take it out another way. Tiles off the roof may be a bit of a carry-on and it probably still wouldn't fit through.
So the options are: a) Cut it up, b) Enlargen the loft hatch.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hang onplastic tanks are designed to go thru loft hatches
Otherwise we would all have trouble changing the tanks.
Try pushing sides together, if its really past it you may well damage it , wot have you got to lose?
Remember the diagonal is longer than the sides!!0 -
let the council scheme deal with it and tell them to take it away.0

wallbash is right, you should be able to push the sides together to flatten it out (but it's old it might be brittle).
Use a bit of rope to hold it flat, then it should go through the hatch. Just be carefull when you undo the rope coz it'll probably ping all over the place.

If it can't be squashed through the hatch (probably will if it went up that way - though they used to stick water tanks in before they built roofs in the days of metal tanks) then i'd just leave it up there - it's no big deal for the insulation installers to move it to one side, insulate the area, then move it back again!
Other ideas i have for old water tanks..outside dog bath, or small garden water feature, or maybe a waterbutt...undecided yet on what to do with mine when i remove it.
