If you know someone who is reasonably tech savvy you could put your disk in tehir PC and see if you can just copy the pictures off it that way.

I'm guessing the error you are getting may be unmountable boot volume. If you can get it to boot from CD you can get inot the recovery console and try chkdsk /r and maybe fixboot

But if you're not confident it may be better to take it to a local shop.

I've removed the drive & brough tit to work, in the hopes that I can get a guy in IT to look into it for me (I lost the annual report I spent 4 weekends working on too!)

if not, back to computer shop / PC World.

I'm a lot calmer today, not sure if it will last, but fingers crossed
