Sky box and card broken

Options
My parents sky box has given up, insides all fried and burnt the sky card

They contacted sky directly and they said it would cost £130 for a next box and card, and that was the discounted rate, even after my dad said he would cancel his subscription!

I was thinking about getting them a second hand box off ebay for about £20 ish but was wondering how it would work with the sky card, sky said they cost £10 on buy it on its own but will the card need to be programmed to the machine? Or is it different if its a second hand box?

Does this need to be done by a sky techie person or is it possible to do it yourself?

Sorry for all the questions just really not sure about any of it, thanks in advance! x

no the card will not needed to be coded to that machine...it will just need activating

it will be as simple as putting it in and then you will probably have to ring sky and then it'll be working

it doesn't matter where you get the box from as you actually BUY the sky box when you go with sky....unlike say virgin media where you just borrow it

i'm sure if he rang sky again and said he would leave etc they would knock the price down
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

Err just to add that when the Sky box went south, it might have taken the LNB on the dish with it so if you get a new box and can't get a picture, suspect the LNB to be duff.

If this is any help my SKY+ all went wrong last week. I called SKY and was told that a call out is £65 and all work guaranteed for 3 months. For that whatever is wrong will get put right even if it means a new box or dish or whatever! In the end I needed a new box, new thingy on the dish and a new wiring from the dish to the box. All for £65. The guy was really nice as our old SKY box had been put upstairs when we got SKY+ and it was soooo old. We asked him very nicely if he could change that too (with our fingers crossed) and he did....wasn't that nice of him, we were in shock!!!
    Good luck!

Out of interest, what's the make and model number on the label underneath?

Equipment should never get hot enough to melt the card under fault conditions so it might be worth asking the local Trading Standards officer to have a look at it as a potential safety issue. They will also give an opinion on whether Sky should replace the box F.O.C.

Of course, if it's several years old then you'll be deemed to have had your money's worth.
