Why pay tuition fees...

In most of the EU, a university education is free. And the great universities of France and Germany are streets ahead of anything in Britain. So learning the language and crossing the water could be a great money-saving scheme.

Other than the fact most brits hate foreign languages?

You'd have to have a very high degree of fluency to cope with university study in a foreign language. Have you seen the standard of A level languages these days? (Ducks!)0

I think those from England, Wales and N Ireland have to pay tuition fees in European universities, but Scottish ones don't (it's a reciprocal relationship). Also, the language barriers would stop almost everyone applying.0

Erm, because I can't speak French or German and I have enough trouble completing assignments in English!
Although I do occasionlly say 'excuse my French' ...!

Well, I would assume it would take a degree in lanuages to make me proficient enough to take a different degree in France/Germany. So, no, that would completely defeat the object!
Also, I am on the old system and don't pay fees anyway, and DH may object to me leaving home for three years!
Seriously though, it makes no sense to me at all, unless I already had a good grasp of the language and wanted to study abroad, perhaps. What happens about living costs? Do you get any loans/grants for that over there?0 -
What makes you say this? A recent ranking of European universities would suggest otherwiseVoyager2002 wrote: »the great universities of France and Germany are streets ahead of anything in Britain.

I think I would be willing to pay the money if it mean I could live in France!
Anyway, my original post came after I had been looking at options for Art school (where language is rather less important than for something like Literature). It does seem as if the courses are free, so I wonder what the catch is?0
