SD is a memory card format commonly used in Digital Cameras, mobile phones etc etc

I thought that but if I put a SD card in the laptop does not see it.

i know this may sound stupid but i use to do this on my laptop......you may have it upside down!!!

my slot would still let me put it in but obviously wouldn't read the card....until i turned it over....simple but can be missed

No I have just double checked and I can only put the card in one way.

I have even taken a look inside and can see the pins at the bottom of the slot.

What capacity is the card? Any idea if it's SDHC or just plain-old SD?

You might be trying to put a newer high capacity SDHC card in a slot that only accepts the old type of SD cards.

Or it could just be a dodgy connection, in which case maybe a wiggle would sort it.

SDIO is a different beast. It's a card using the SD form factor that adds, for instance, GPS, 3G or a camera to a PDA usually. I've never seen an SDIO card on a laptop, but I can imagine a laptop having one.
