Dropping a country would not mean that the other countries are not still united.

    Definitions dear boy, definitions.

The UK of GB came into being with the Act of Union (1707) & refers specifically to the kingdoms of Scotland & England. In 1801 it became the UK of GB & Ireland including the kingdom of Ireland.

Most of Ireland is no longer part of the union (& no longer a kingdom), leaving only two kingdoms (+ 1 principality & 1 province). Were Scotland to secede there would be no united kingdom - there would be two independent kingdoms.

Next Great Britain refers to the largest island in the British Isles - if the island is no longer united then the UK of GB is no longer accurate.

Finally if Scotland secedes there is a fair chance NI would do the same - either becoming an independent country or to form some sort of union with the Republic (what with Catholics breeding faster than Prods).
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.
