Although this may be a techie message board, I seriously am not one!
I've got together an ok website using the hosts website builder but now want my website to appear on search engines or maybe earning through advertising (don't think I've the knowledge on this but hey!!!)
I've been reading other threads and my head is reeling - can anyone either explain the best way of your website appearing on google (I don't have the income to pay) or other websites or maybe through other means, or alternatively point me to a dummy's guide to advertising your website. My website is a hobby that I would love to develop further but in order to maximise the market I need to have some kind of a presence on the net.
Fingers crossed and thanks!

Will it guarantee my website gets up on google? I found this earlier and entered up but it still isn't appearing - am I impatient or does it take time? Thanks0

SO what's a good way to do that - is it about paying for the service - that worries me in case I end up paying out more than I could possibly earn!0

Where's an easy to use guide and how do I get other sites to link to mine?0

On my site I just bunged loads of keywords on the home page, it worked for me, my site was number two on the first page of Google for "adult humour" its slipped a bit now to number four, other search engines like Yahoo UK must use another system, I'm on page two there, as for earning anything from adverts I've earned 37p in the past two years, mind you I never expected to make anything, I just did the site for a bit of fun. There are 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't...0

I assume all the words had relevance!! Its worth me revisiting my home page to ensure I encompass as many keywords as possible. Or maybe there's something to learn in what you say... Hmmm! Thanks it's useful to hear what's worked for you.0

the first two things you need to do are
1) go to https://www.google.com/addurl/ and submit your webpage
2)set up google analytics on your site - https://www.google.com/analytics/ as this allows you to monitor where your traffic comes from
Keep updating your content with related material - as regularly as possible as google like this and will rank you higher. Content is key to any site.
Linking other sites to yours is good when you know the owners. The most successful links I have had have been from people I know on related message boards. Dj boards etc etc.
There's plenty you can do to increase your ranking without paying, but top of that list is putting fresh material on your site. Start a blog & put up relevant postings daily.
It all takes time with google ,as there have been sites like yours online for much longer than you. So be patient!David James aint got nothing on me0 -
Thank you for some really helpful information _ I shall do what you say - but one further phrase I don't understand is "blogging" - what exactly is that?
Yes, I'm pretty green around the gils!!0 -
Ok, blogging is really just like an online diary of events or random collection of thoughts.
set up a page on your site https://www.yoursite.com/blog & keep a diary of work you are doing or your thoughts on different areas of your work. Keep it on topic & put as much up as possible.
Also use keywords regularly but do not over use them.
For example: I have a blog where I put money saving ideas from a printers perspective - so your marketing budgets dont get blown out of the water.David James aint got nothing on me0 -
As mentioned sign up to Google Analytics, and also Google Webmaster.
It is very tricky to make top 5 and it doesn't happen over night. In Google Webmaster it talks about improving your ranking."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
i use things like google maps as well and used the google tools as listed in link mentioned above, it took a few days but I am now 1st in results for 'google uk site search' and 3rd in 'google search the web' for keywords fighting debt.
It took me time and I've still loads to do on my webpage but the google workshop which you'll need a gmail account (free) should help even if it takes a few days.
Not tackled any other yet, but I've got details how, msn is quite complicated which I will work on soon.
hope this helps0
