Help needed buying a laptop/pc please?

Options
Hi all,
Just wondered if anyone can help me -
I want to buy a laptop or pc - (do you get more for your money with a pc?)
I want to spend max £350 I think, It is needed for general internet use, ocassional gaming, and to store photos.

Problem is I dont have a clue - went to pc world today, I have been looking around but I dont know what is good for my money - as I am looking for a good deal!

Can anyone help with either pointers, ie make sure it has this... or any deals you have seen? - or who to avoid!

thanks in advance xxx

Well in my experience PC worlds after service is absolute rubbish. Though they do have some good deals on. I personally recommend dell but you would probably have to pay a little more than 350 (more like 400 at a guess)
Whatever you get it really needs 1 gig or more of ram and if your after playing games it must have a half decent graphics card. Any processor of 2 gig or more should be ok for general playing of games (though I do recommend a dual core model).
As for storing photos I think just about everything has at least an 80 gig hardrive these days which is ample for general storage of pics.

Avoid PC World they baffle you with RAM and GIG and leave you not knowing what you want.
Desktops are more versitile than laptops as a general rule and you wont have any problem upgrading in the future.
Get to the library and borrow Haynes 'Build Your own Computer' dont worry its easy to follow. For £350 you'll get a really good dual core PC maybe quad core if your savvy :) I use mine for similar use and it was around £200 with the advantage of I know whats in it.
  • Thanks for all the advice! - I now know what to look for!
  • £350 will get you a half decent laptop but they're a pain to upgrade (add more ram, extra hard drives etc) so id probably go with a desktop unit. As above really, dell will probably be best although keep an eye on your local supermarket from time to time they get some decent deals in.

If you do go down the laptop route (personally i think they're just more convenient - doesn't take up room, wireless, can be used anywhere etc) try and get an external hard drive for things like music / photos and videos so they dont bog it down, can get a 750 gig external hard drive for about £100

    Cheers

Don't forget after you have shopped around for the best price, if you are going to order it online, to use a cashback site.

The extra 2, 3 or 5%+ makes all the difference sometimes
