Free paint/photoshop-type downloads?

Just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a photoshop-type programme that's free to download. Only for doing very basic edits to drawings and photos (erasing lines, shading, cropping etc) - but if there are more exciting programmes offering more tools out there I'd be glad to try them!
