Freecycle - some questions !!

We joined freecycle yesterday as we have been dumping stuff that would have been good for someone else so its idea appealed.
Put a tumble dryer on there and have a had a good response - how do we decide who gets it ? Is it first come, first served ?
I wasn't expecting to have a moral dilemma over giving stuff away..........

Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

I would be inclined to offer it to the first person to respond politely. Seeing as you're not getting any cash for your tumble dryer, the very least you're owed is a bit of manners. Also trust your gut instinct - if someone sounds like a timewaster, avoid.
Good luck deciding.0 -
Hi I use freecycle all the time and am a moderator on my local one. I usually wait around 24 hours before deciding so those who were at work etc can get a chance to look. I usually pick someone who would get the most use of of it. Or who could pick it up quickest etc, its up to you. Picking the first or second to reply is fine too. Its a great site I have received loads as well as giving loads away.

Thanks for your advice so far !!
We have a couple of very strong replies but I may go for the 'first come, first served' basis because it saves any heartache.
I never thought that giving something away could be so difficult !!!!Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -
I go by a first come first served basis but if the reply does not say please or thank you I wait for the next one. If some one does not turn up to collect when arranged and did not let me know then I would not accept their request in the future!! (harsh but fair)0

I use Freecycle alot both for giving and receiving goods. I only give to those who are polite ...its amazing how many rude people are out there who demand the free stuff!:mad:0

I agree, I always give to the first polite email I recieve.
Have had emails just saying 'i'll have it'0 -
I usually give to the first person to contact me.
I have noticed that in some of the threads on Freecycle, some people do put name will be pulled out of a hat.0 -
Never again gave away a TV 28" JVC immaculate the person arrived and had a pick up truck i helped him out with it,
It was obvious that this was more stock for him going by what else he had and said you would be amazed what people give away BE AWARE not all are what they seam and speaking to someone over the phone does not always weed the people out who are just in it to make money from your generosity.0 -
I love freecycle - have offered and taken. I always choose the 1st polite email - they need to say hello, please and thank you.New surname New start!

For me personally with items like that i tend to wait 24 hours to let people have a good chance of looking and contacting me, only because it gives the people who work a chance to get in from work and have a look through what's on offer.
I then go on my gut feeling of who i think deserves it. Sounds harsh, but i delete all emails that simply say i'll have it or along those lines.
I then block all people who are rude, especially the women i got a few weeks ago who when i didn't offer her 1 of my 2 mobile phones on offer, i got a reply back from her saying 'you really know how to upset children don't you'.
Needless to say i won't forget her username.
In terms of like smaller things, i go on 1st come 1st served especially if i want it gone asap and they can collect very quickly.Mummy to two girls: October 2013 and February 20160
