Dur to a plumer wiring my immersion wrong and off being on and vice versa we have had the immersion heater on for 10 days 24/7.
As we live in rented house we want to claim this back as it was due to his fault, but we have no idea how much it would have cost us. Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks

It will cost 30p an hour when it is heating, but just because the immersion heater is switched on it doesn't mean it is heating or costing you anything to run as the thermostat has switched off the heater.
For instance after you have had your morning showers, it might only take 30 mins to heat up the water and then the thermostat will switch off the Immersion heater.
So there is no way to work out the cost - it depends how much hot water you use.
Perhaps the best way to calculate your costs is to take the average consumption of energy to heat hot water in a UK house.
That is approx 3,000kWh say 60kWh a week.
he immersion heater will cost approx £6 a week for hot water.£10 a day - Sept 08 £245/£3000 -
Thanks so much for your prompt and full reply, I have never had an immersion heater before and wasnt aware about the thermosate turning it off. you have taught me something!
Not too sure if it is now worth moaning about but still its the point......0 -
I have a combi boiler so i dont have this issue, i have hot water when i want it. Very energy efficent too especially the newer ones. My gas bill is around £60-£80 quarterly in summer and around £100 in winter
very annoying though. Think you should tell your landlord you have a problem and then if you have a massive bill through ask him for the money.£10 a day - Sept 08 £245/£3000 -
Of course it depends upon how well the hotwater tank is lagged... if its poorly lagged then it will lose a lot of heat and the will then automatically switch back on so the water can be reheated ....
so could cost quite a lot...
but difficult to work out unless you simply try it and see by taking suitable meter readings.0 -

I was assuming the landlord would have done this but knowing most landlords they dont care! they just want to make a quick buck£10 a day - Sept 08 £245/£3000 -
Could you compare the last electricity bill with the one which will cover the time the immersion was on? If you generally have the same bill each time that should give you an indication of how much extra electricity you have used.
I had a similar experience when the dozy plumber fitted the hot and cold pipes on the washing machine the wrong way, round so it was washing with cold water and rinsing with hot ! Was like it for several years before i found out.0
