Now I know this is not 'flying' but I need advice as to what to do so if pigpen doesnt mind I want to ask here first - I have narrowed my 'to do' list down into 4 categories (thanks to greenbee and denise for their help) the only one that I am concentrating on at the moment is the urgent/important one.
On this list I have 5 things -
    1. do something about my debt problems - I have huge debts and have been trying to get them sorted for a long time and was making progress -anyway things got a bit worse with one of them in december - I went to the CAB and they started helping me or so I thought - the long and the short is I am still no further forward - Have any of you used the DFW board and got help - I am a bit scared of posting onthere to be honest but dont know what else to do.
    2. decide about reclaiming bank charges - Do I start a claim for bank charges? I have read the main site info but seem to go round in circles - has anyone done a claim?
    3. decide what to do about gas/elec bills
    4. sort through paperwork on kitchen table and do filing - I have a small kitchen table (about 3feet x 2.5 feet) and it is stacked up with paperwork - I gathered all the piles of paper from about the flat and put it all there - some of the stacks are about 2 feet high!!! Should I spend a day doing it or should I just do it a bit at a time?? I cant eat in the kitchen until its done. and there is paperwork in it that i will need for some of these other items
    5. Change bank details of 3 direct debits this is a fairly easy one when i find the paperwork - they need to be done before the 1st - OMG i have just realised thats monday - oh well I can probably find what I need and do that tomorrow.
I am really sorry if I shouldnt be posting this sort of thing- so i wont be offended if you cant answer me - or even if someone could pm me with any suggestions I would be very grateful - no.1 is a biggy and it scares the carp out of me!!

    toots xx

Toots, I've no idea if this is the right or wrong place to ask this, but here's my two-pennorth for the little it's worth.

    1. I've read the DFW board with great interest, and they seem to be a helpful bunch especially if you give them info.
    2. Sorry, no experience on this one as I've always "shouted" at my bank the moment I'd spotted charges that I thought were innapropriate, but I'm sure someone else will be able to help :)
    3. Again, I can't help with this one. I'm in a capped rate until the end of Sept and Scottish Power have today announced big increases. I think Martin has an article on this, sure I read it yesterday and he said to hang fire on it for the moment.
    4. The paperwork .... ah, now you see, you can make this into a definite flying thing. I would say do 15 mins at a time .... a bit like a HHI or HHC ... slowly but surely the mountain will crumble. I've been battling varying paperwork for a while, and what I do is separate into piles .... 1st envelopes and junk mail can go into a pile to either be recycled or shredded (that alone makes the mountain look more manageable), then a pile for bills, one for receipts etc., ... then with the bills, if you've been stacking up bills, put the leccy bills on one pile, c/c ones on another etc., this way you may just find the details for no.5 on your list too :)

Good luck, we're here to support you :)

Sounds like your kitchen table is a major hotspot, so I'm sure you'll be allowed to let this count! I can't help with 1 & 2, as I've been lucky enough not to have personal experience of it, but I'm sure the DFW guys will be helpful, and even putting some time aside to read through the posts there will help.

I can help on gas/elec if you give me more details (I work for one of the utilities :o ), but suggest you PM me, as it might take a bit of discussion.

As far as your kitchen table goes - do you have a filing cabinet/drawer/box? If so, take a small pile off the table and over to the cabinet, file it (putting anything that is still to be actioned into a NEW pile), then go and do something else for at least half an hour (there's always the ironing :rotfl: ). If not, first thing you need to do tomorrow is get yourself a concertina file or a set of folders to keep this stuff in.

Anything that's ancient history can be filed straight away, and it'll be more manageable . Then sort out the stuff that needs dealing with into subject (e.g. gas/elec/phone/bank) by supplier (e.g. bank - TSB, Lloyds etc if you have more than one), and then by date - most urgent first. Put the overdue  stuff in a separate pile.

Once its sorted, have another break. Then take stuff for the next week off the top of the pile, and work your way through it. Once you've done this proactive stuff, have another break, and take a deep breath and deal with the overdue stuff.

Remember, it's breaking it down that makes it manageable. (And writing lists that you can tick things off always helps, so do this as you go along. Include the breaks as things you have to do!).

    Hope this helps.
