Mike’s Election Guide 2008
By Michael Moore
To be published by Penguin (paperback original) on 19th August 2008,
priced £7.99
Michael Moore returns with his first book in five years, to give the low-down on democracy. Published to coincide with the US election, this is Moore at his very best – hilarious, informed, passionate, and more outrageous than ever.
In Mike’s Election Guide 2008, Moore explains the importance of democracy through the lens of the US elections. Never one to shy away from solutions, Moore tackles questions about voter apathy and how to increase voter turn-out (countries with the highest turn-out at elections hold polling day on weekends unlike the States and the UK).
He answers the fundamental questions at the heart of the US election including: How to Elect John McCain…Or How Many Democrats Does it Take to Lose the Most Winnable Presidential Election in American History?; Republicans: are they gay?; and who would Jesus vote for?
Providing concrete advice for the next President (Obama), Moore lists ten decrees for his first ten days. These include bringing back the draft – but only for the children of the rich; arresting anyone who tries to make a profit from healthcare; defeating al-Qaeda by building wells to provide safe drinking water for those in the world without it; and providing good free TV for all.
The final task he argues, would take place on January 20 2009 at 12.01pm once the election is over: arrest George W Bush and his Administration and put them on trial as an example to future leaders.
An urgent call to arms, Mike’s Election Guide couldn’t be more timely.
