Loft Conversion Staircase

Options
My oh and I are in the middle of a large extension and loft conversion. Unfortunately money is getting a little tight!!!
We need to put a set of stairs up into the loft our only problem is the gap we have is approx 830mm wide, standard staircases are 860mm wide so was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that we can get staircases which are non standard sizes??

We have spoken to a couple of companies locally which make staircases unfortunately these are the sort of places that make very grand ones and all we want is a standard 13 step staircase.. the only difference is the width..
We have been quoted approx £1000  by both companies which is a lot more than we really want to pay.

If anyone knows of someone/ a company in East Sussex who may be able to help would love their details

Many thanks

  • Get a few quotes from local carpenters. My own staircase access to the loft was made by the man who converted the loft.

To keep costs down we got our builder to only build the shell of the extension and to do the roof part of the loft conversion. My Oh is excellent at diy so we have plugged away at getting the rest done ourselves. Unfortunately wasn't expecting the stairs to be as expensive as the figures we have been quoted.

Not sure where to start on finding a carpenter/joiner who would be any good. We don't know anyone locally so not sure how to go about finding someone reputable..
If anyone can recommend a way to find a reputable carpenter I would be grateful. Have been trying to sort this out for about 4 weeks now and starting to think about just putting a ladder up there!!!:rotfl:

i would have thought that a 1000 quid staircase, to your size, is a good deal.
    Get some gorm.

It wouldn't be a bad deal, but considering that I can go to a local builders merchant and buy a bulk standard staircase for about £200. I am reluctant to spend anymore than I have to.

How difficult would it be to buy a standard size staircase and cut it down to size. If bought from a builders merchant do they come ready assembled or in pieces?? If in pieces would it be relatively easy to cut the bits to size??

Screwfix do a space saver staircase for about £600 though you can get them cheaper.
Workmate used one last year on their loft conversion the only thing is they can only call it storage space should they ever sell as they're classed as a secondary staircase.
Its just storage space with an en suite and bed in it :)
