2 week old PC not booting up

Options
Hi,

I have just got an ex-display Philips LRPC7500 desktop from PC world a couple of weeks ago. I specifically wanted this model as my daughter has one, and it is one of the few desktops that it is wireless (without needing a dongle). It has been fine.

All of a sudden this afternoon when it is switched on the "Philips" logo is displaying on screen but nothing else is happening. After a couple of minutes it just turns off again. I have looked at the troubleshooting manual & tried pressing F8 as suggested when it is first switched on, but still nothing.

I don't know what to do...?!?!?! Any (simple) suggestions from anyone before I get in touch with the shop (which should be fun)??? Please.....

    or that ...lol

Vista does have a repair function , enter bios on boot , normally F2 but it will tell you as it's turned on , will say Setup or something

change the boot order to boot from CD , then put the Vista CD that came with it in the drive and turn on

I occasionally get this. Try switching off at the mains for a minute and then try starting it again.

Silly question, but you have checked the connections for the monitor, as it's not uncommon for the video connector to come slightly adrift if not screwed in properly, but looks connected! There might also be one at the back/bottom of the monitor too, as some monitors have removable cables.

What you could be seeing the monitor's screen saver and then turns off when not detecting any input. Which also could be a lose VGA card in the PC (but this is unlikely as the PC would beep and complain, and lot of basic off the shelf PCs have onboard graphics!)

That is assuming it's a Philips monitor!

  • Cheers all. I am going to ring them - just wanted to see if there might be anything very obvious to check first.. lol

It won't let me into any mode at all :( I've tried pressing F8 (as suggested in troubleshooting manual), and every other F key after that. Nothing.

It didn't come with a disk?! :( Done the switching off at the mains 2 or 3 times.

I'll double-check the monitor connections but it's not a Philips monitor so it seems as though PC is connected but not working...

Back to PC World for me...... what joy.

Thanks for the suggestions/advice though, much appreciated.

  • While it is turned off and unplugged, open the case and check that the hard drive cable has not come loose. If it's OK at both ends, then check other connectors such as those going to the CD-ROM.

Bad connections can prevent boot-up. Hope this helps. :D
  • TimeBandit - that might as well be Greek to me, lol!!!!! However, my little brother will understand that so I'll get him to check later.

    Thank you!

If your litlte brother is likley to be delving around inside, watch out for security seals, you may find that when it still does not work your helpful brother has given PC World the ideal excuse to do nothing because the PC has been "tampered" with

    I would take it back
