1GB will be fine but you can pick up 2gb for not much more. You will see a whole lot of difference in performance.
By the way, She could have brought a much better spec brand new one for less. She has well and truly been ripped off. The guy obviously thinks she is a mug.
anyway back to the laptop its a acer aspire 5052...
its got an 80gb hdd but he has partitioned it 40 40 for some strange reason...it says it has 1gb of ram but only 512 ram showing...
actually it says there is 443mb of ram...
anyway AVG 7.5 was the problem it wouldn't up-date obviously cos it's out of date software so I took that off...and put on threatfire instead...
windows also hadn't up-dated because AVG wouldn't un-install at first it was stopping up-dates from up-dating...
but after hour's of sorting things out it is finally working ok and I put in a 1gb usb pen drive to readyboost which seems to be making it run better...
Vista actually defrags itself once aweek on a wednesday at 1am by default...
to find out what your's is doing right-click on your hdd and go to properties...then tools and defragment now and see what you hard drive is up to...
oh and before I forget its running vista home premium How I do not know...beat's me oh yes and no vista dics...no surprises there then...
but it says its activated

a little advice on the defragging....turn it off as this can slow it down (you only really need to defrag once a month weekly is to often)
and the reason its showing only 443mb ram is probably because its using some of it for the graphics card (you might be able to release some by going into the BIOS)
and you should go on onto www.crucial.com amd get some extra RAM and you will see a massive improvement (as others have said before me)If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
I would be hopping mad.
That's basically the laptop I bought for my girlfriend more than a year ago. Only hers has more options, including built in Bluetooth, built in webcam... and cost 350 pounds new. I think her's too was partitioned.
It needs DDR2 533MHz Memory. Her's has 1.5GB and is running XP.
Yours should have at least 2GB.
Available here for 25 pounds for 2 x 1GB.
Amazon 26 pounds for the pair or 25.44 here.
Play.com Fifteen pounds per GB.
Please check compatibility with vendor before purchase.well she is well and truly mad with this guy...anyway nothing much we can do now...I am gonna ring the trading standards department and see if anyone else has reported this guy before...

I will have to buy or get one that someone no longer wants so I can have a play around with it...it looks easy enough when you see it on the internet but how easy...really thanks for all your help guys...:A

It's REALLY easy to fit the RAM. You will be able to fit it in under five minutes.
There's a panel at the bottom of the laptop. Unscrew it. Remove the old RAM and replace it with the new. Screw panel back on.
If it takes you ten minutes, you probably fell asleep during the fitting.0 -

thing is.. with any new computer or laptop, for at least the past 4 years by my reckoning, you have never got discs with it..
a partition is reasonably standard, and a hidden partition for restore is also very standard..
also, with 443mb ram, you obviously have a shared graphics card, which is eating up the difference from 512mb... however, where the other 512mb is, i have no idea!
