Hi - hope this is the correct place to post this question
I need to purchase a laptop for use for my studies. I have done lots of searching on the internet and have read many reviews but to be honest am a bit overwhelmed by the amount of choice. I don't know anything about computers and obviously being a money saver don't want to pay out more than I need to for specifications that are greater than my requirements.
maybe someone can offer a little advice?
I need something that is light - preferably with a screen 12 - 13". It will be for general use only; word, excel, powerpoint, accessing research papers online - oh and watching the odd movie
Any information would be appreciated - whether it be a brand that you'd recommend or a specific model.
I have up to £700 to spend (but would prefer not to!)
Many thanks in advance:beer:

Any model from both will do what you want, Just need to purchase Office or use open office which is free.0 -
thanks for your advice - I had looked at the Dell xps and read some good reviews on it - hadn't seen the toshiba one though.0

If you can get a good used IBM/Lenovo X31 or X32 with built in Wireless and say a Gig of memory and XP, this would be a solid workhorse.
Build quality + keyboard of the X series exceeds any of the new cheapies around.0 -
If you want something really portable, you could do worse than the Advent 4211 - weighs just over a kilo, only a 10" screen but that really does make it small enough to shove in a bag like a hardback book. Great specs for the price (£279 at PC World) and it's getting good reviews:

if you can wait until x-mas dell will be releasing their inspiron 910Mega Doctor Who, Gadget and MSE Fan!
If you found my post helpful then please click "Thanks"0 -
With 1GB of memory and XP, the Advent does look like a good bet if you NEED ultraportability. Just beware the potentially weak WiFi kit that's onboard.0
