Can I varnish ceramic floor tiles?

This may sound a bit crazy! We have just bought a new house that has a very smart tiled kitchen floor. We like everything about it, apart from the colour of the tiles, which are a deep red, with a brown mottle. They are a ceramic glazed tile. We need loads else doing to the house, and would love not to have to replace this perfectly good floor, so I wondered about options for toning down the red.
I don't want to use floor paint on the floor, because I'd like to keep some variation of tone on the tiles. Today I had the idea that I could try varnishing them, maybe with a deep walnut brown or something, to really tone down the red. Am I crazy - or might it work okay?
I had a quick go on a spare tile with some dark oak varnish, but TBH it didn't really tone down the red. I think I'd need a much darker varnish, with a good density of colour.
Any thoughts/advice will be greatly appreciated, and may save us about five hundred pounds!

I would not bother trying to varnish over your tiles, what are you going to do when the varnish breaks down due to cleaning and all the wear and tear from feet ? It may look grt for a month or so then may end up looking a right mess especially if the varnish chips off too
