Postage rip off

Do you buy your Jiffy bags singly at the post office? 50p for a jiffy bag seems rather expensive. I buy mine from Poundland, where they cost £1 (obviously) for a pack of 8 of suitable size for videos, games etc. They also have packs of (I think) 10 small or 4 large ones.parkside_stroller wrote:I sell video games I have played and no longer want (often buy them on ebay as well) - e.g. Game sells at £5 plus £2.25 post, pack and handling. From this my actual income would be £4.97 as I have deducted 50p for a jiffy bag, 78p post, 20p ebay listing fee, 59p for accepting paypal and 25p for withdrawing it to my bank account - TOTAL £2.32 and I haven't taken into account transport to the post office yet.
You can also buy in bulk on eBay - here's one example:

though I do find it slightly suspicious that the seller wants so much extra for optional recorded delivery and says standard delivery is at the buyer's risk, but they've 100% positive feedback so it's proably not as bad as it sounds!0 -
With regards to OP, I would have ignored your second mail, blocked your mail address and blocked you from bidding, sorry but I think what you did was unnecessary and could almost consitute harrassment. Ebays unsaid motto is "if you don't like the price, don't bid", I don't buy books from Amazon because they charge postage, i buy them from Play.com or order 3 from Bol. I always add up the price of the item on ebay together with the p&p and if I think it's fair, then I bid. Today, as an example, I bid (but got outbid for 10 flipping p!!) on a stool - it was 99p, and the postage was courier 5.00 - this was the same price as the postage I paid from the same seller for 2 very large metal and seagrass linen baskets - so it would be fair to say she is making and losing on her auctions. However.... I feel that 5.99 would have been a fair price (and so would 6.04 had I have been quicker lol). Last weekend, I ordered 2 stair gates - postage on one - via courier was 8.95, additional items were 4.95, so I therefore paid 13.90 in postage, and yes, you've guessed it, the parcels were sealed together and I doubt for one moment parcel line charged that much as I lifted them up with one hand and carried them up the garden path, however....... again, the overall price was fair. I don't like blatant rip-offs where it is obvious they are avoiding fees (ie selling something for a penny with 20.00 postage fees so getting their money that way, and in that instance I wouldn't bid in principle. However, I would be interested to know how much MY leather jacket would cost to post taking into account secure packaging etc as it weighs a tonne (wel, probably not literally!!!) ETA - I fibbed, I did order from amazon this week, wonder what that could have been lol...but made the order up to get the free delivery0

I agree with you 100%.
TightoldGit obviously had no intention of buying but still e-mails people..then argues the toss over something he doesn't want...TOG..get a LIFE!!!
Surprised he has the time ...since from previous posts he either spends his time pretending not to be in when the Water man calls ( to save £5!!!)..or advises us how to sneak cheap bottles of rum into pubs to avoid paying for drinks in pubs......I think somewhere the line between money saving and being tight-fisted got blurred....must be all his cheap rum !

No poundland near me - unfortunately - 55 miles round trip, nightmare to find a parking space and would then have to add £1.15 a bag into P+P.. BARGAIN - will have to increase my postal charge now - just as I was trying to be conscientious and keep them down.
Oh no Peril you have caused an INCREASE in charges, what have you started with your mildness.... this is a RANT thread!
Well OK playing it for a laugh. Thanks for the info though and I will check it out on the odd occasion I go to that town.
I checked your ebay link - good for bulk sellers, but for people selling a few games of their own games, wouldn't be worthwhile, as I have found in the past. In my old city locality cheapest 38p each plus an hour 15mins walk to shop, post office and home or ext. my lunch break by an unauthorised hr at the P.O. nr work, I could easily have lost my job or quarter an inch of my waistline.......think local P.O. at 50p was Ok, especially as one I use now doesn't seem to think that people might want to buy anything other than stamps - had to buy tape at £1.50 (used to pay £1) and jiffy for EIGHTY PENCE at local newsagent.
To my mind, your comment about the sellers charge for insured delivery in some ways fits in with my points anyway - buyers not always realising the true cost of selling/good deal they're getting. I don't actually know the full cost of insuring a parcel (or the actual cost of anything other than pizza, beer and the occasional train ticket) sent from Germany, but its only about 5p extra per jiffy bag and, as you said, the seller has good feedback.0 -

Julie, a lot of what you say here I agree with - I don't bid if I don't like the charges but in the context of what it is actually going to cost me in total. I've no prob with people trying to avoid ebay selling fees by putting the bulk on P+P rather than on the starting price. I don't do it myself but you will still often find you are getting a good deal in total price when you compare it to online stores - if the price is right for me then I would buy it.
With regard to your courier delivery, I had a look at parceline prices and perhaps like many, its cheaper the more you send at once - the prices should I have failed (as often) to sell everthing I listed at once don't bear thinking about. I've no idea what it would have cost to send your goods from what they state on the website but from looking at alternatives to Royal Mail in the past 6 weeks, I noticed that unlike Royal M. charges are sometimes based not on weight (and destination), but on a combination of size, weight and destination - I didn't go got it.
By the way, it is hell trying to get that bargain for a tenner on amazon whilst finding something else that you want at the right price to take it over £15 for free deliv.0 -

re amazon - I know it is, thats why I rarely use it, but I wanted Martin to get the credit for the book and he wouldn't have done had I have gone elsewhere (bit braindead, not credit but can't think of the word atm!!), I did manage to order my daughter her annual though and a book of raising chickens (don't ask lol)0 -

Au contraire I had every intention of buying but I will not be scammed, the same seller sells a similar leather jacket for the BIN price of £149 but only charges £6.50 for postage which includes insurance according to auction #7722455673
The seller could not reasonably justify why he charges £20 for shipping the item I wanted so the money stays in my wallet end of.0 -
Now if you want to see what real rip off posting is look at this and the other items he sells!!
